The World Class Bhangra committee is characterised by talented, experienced bhangra dancers, all working towards creating a competition experience like no other.
JUDGES LIASON LEAD
Meet Zara Zaman, the President of World Class Bhangra. Zara’s passion for bhangra was first kindled in 2017 after competing in The Bhangra Showdown alongside fellow students at City, University of London. She has since competed in a further 3 bhangra competitions and is currently the co-captain for Lok Nach Bhangra, a UK based professional bhangra team. Zara spends her days (and nights) working as a Registered Nurse for the NHS and has aspirations to become an oncology nurse specialist. She also has a keen interest in national politics and is a former Member of Youth Parliament for the British Youth Council.
& TECHNICAL LEAD
Meet Amar Kalsi, the official World Class Bhangra Mixer and Technical Lead. Amar first began creating mixes in 2016 after having danced for Imperial College University in the same year. His portfolio includes Imperial College 2017, 2018 and Ankhi Jawan Girls 2018, as well as recent works under the name of Immortal Sounds. Amar is also a former TBS committee member and has helped to run the competition backstage for the Past 3 years. Currently, he is working in the field of Computer Vision and Robotics.
Meet Vik Kainth, the World Class Bhangra Creative Lead. Vik is a digital illustrator, best known for unique artwork featuring maharanis, maharajas and celebrity figures. His artwork has recently been featured by The Times Of India
newspaper, the BBC, Naomi Campbell’s ‘Fashion For Relief’ Project and in screen artwork for Gurdas Manns official UK tour in 2019. Vik is also a professional dhol player. He regularly plays for the renowned Imperial Drummers, who have been featured in Big Narstie’s late night music show and Aladdin 2019. His previous bhangra dance appearances are with BPD in 2014, LNBPD in 2015 and BFD in 2016.
JUDGES LIAISON LEAD
Meet Jessica Gar-lai Cheung, our Judges Liaison Lead.
Jessica co-founded and captained the Loughborough University Bhangra Team (UK) which recently won first place at Capital Bhangra 2019. Jessica is a three-time winner of the Best Female Dancer award and in 2019, represented the UK as an international judge in Singapore. With 9 competitions under her belt, Jessica intends to use her experiences as a captain and judge to develop judging practice within the UK and is committed to building better representation for women in the judging field. Jessica works as a business consultant for tech giant IBM and is currently training for a sponsored 10k run.
Meet Sonika Sethi, our Events & Hospitality Lead. Sonika’s love for bhangra sparked in 2015 with her university team Imperial College, and since then has competed in 5 competitions. She is a former captain for Bhangra Punjabian Da and regularly teaches classes at Punjabi Folk Arts Academy. She is also a writer and presenter for DesiBlitz.com, an award winning online Asian magazine. Sonika has been involved in covering high profile events such as the IIFA awards, London Fashion Week & Bollywood press conferences. Sonika is an academic FY1 doctor working in the midlands.
Meet Simren Panesar, our Volunteers Lead. Having always had a passion for dance and performing arts, she attended a theatre school from the ages 7-18 where she learned and performed ballet, tap, musical theatre and commercial dance. Simren is completing her Masters in International Relations at the University of Manchester. She joined their Bhangra Society in 2016 and has since been actively involved in leading classes and performing in exhibition events. Simren was Co-President of the society from 2017-2019, and Co-Captained in 2019. She has been a dancer with Lok Nach Bhangra since 2017.
